Tips for Decorating Your Bedroom on a Budget

by Lori Madden 10/24/2021

Your bedroom is arguably the most important room in the house. This is the place where you go each night to rest your head and restore your energy. It's where you get ready for the day that lies ahead. Knowing this, you probably want to make sure that your bedroom is decorated to your liking. Fortunately, there are many ways to make your bedroom a beautiful and peaceful place without going over budget.

Here's how to decorate your bedroom on a budget:

Buy a Print - Not an Original

Most people like to display art in their bedroom, but it can be expensive to purchase an authentic work from a local art gallery. If you aren't ready to take the leap into the world of fine art, you can still add a replica masterpiece to your room. Today, it's very easy to purchase prints of your favorite works. Whether you want an idyllic Monet above your headboard or a dramatic Picasso near the sitting area, you can often find a more affordable print to frame and hang in your bedroom.

DIY Your Headboard

New bedroom furniture often comes with a hefty price tag. If you need a refresh but aren't able to spend big on a new bedroom outfit, then you might want to consider crafting your own headboard. You can use reclaimed barn wood or any other type of wood to create a headboard that is completely unique. This also gives you the freedom to set the style and tone for your room without being stuck with the manufacturer's selection at the showroom.

Upcycle Old Bedroom Furniture

Another option for your bedroom furniture is to simply upcycle it. Rather than getting rid of the set that you have, you can strip down the wood and create something new. Many people opt to stain the wood a different color and then seal it for protection. You also could paint your furniture a bright or bold color, allowing the furniture itself to serve as an accent in your bedroom.

Reupholster Throw Pillows

If you have decided to switch out your bedroom set with a new quilt or duvet, you can quickly update the rest of your decor without purchasing new pieces. One of the best ways to reuse your throw pillows is to reupholster them to match your new bedding. This is a quick and cheap way to make sure your bedroom outfit looks cohesive.

Switch Your Furniture Hardware

Sometimes the smallest details can make the biggest difference in your bedroom. If you have recently updated the look of your bedroom you can also update the hardware on your furniture to match the new style. Fresh hardware, such as new knobs for your dresser or for your nightstand, will give your furniture a completely different look. The best part is, new hardware is relatively inexpensive and there are a lot of different styles to choose from.

Your bedroom should reflect your personal style. It is one of the rooms where you can have the most freedom with decorating because it is not often on display to your guests who are coming through. This private and personal space is truly yours, so you should decorate it exactly the way that you prefer.

As a Florida native growing up in Sarasota, I have seen my hometown grow from a sleepy coastal town to a highly sought-after destination along the shores of the Gulf of Mexico. After working in Chicago for 5 years, I returned to Sarasota and saw it through a new lens and really began to appreciate what makes Sarasota so desirable, including temperatures that allow for year round outdoor activities including tennis (a personal favorite), golf, boating, kayaking, fishing, paddle boarding, or just relaxing and/or shelling on our pristine sandy shores, including Dr. Beach’s #1 beach in the United States for 2017, Siesta Key! Sarasota’s cultural amenities are many and diverse, appealing to a wide range of arts lovers. Downtown Sarasota has become a destination in itself, drawing many new developments for those who want to be within walking distance of Main Street's offerings and the picturesque bayfront and marina. Foodies will find an eclectic mix of locally owned and operated restaurants offering something for everyone, and there are now Farmers Markets every day of the week in various locations throughout Sarasota, but the Saturday morning Farmers Market in downtown Sarasota draws the biggest crowds. Since 1988, my passion has been selling real estate, representing both buyers and sellers. I have been recognized by my clients and customers for an uncompromising work ethic and dedication to helping them achieve their real estate goals. Relying on my experience as a real estate paralegal and being highly organized, I am able to help make the transition between contract and closing a smooth one for my clients. With an eye for interior and landscape design, I've been known to pitch in and help Sellers minimize and/or reorganize their belongings in order to stage their home to maximize its sale potential. I specialize in out of state buyers looking for their piece of paradise along the Gulf Coast and make it a priority to keep them up to date on our quickly changing local real estate market. I welcome the opportunity to share with you all Sarasota and her surrounding islands have to offer!
